Racal Instruments are to supply the 3G (UMTS- FDD) 6401 terminal test system that RFI will use to launch its 3G services in 2002 after validating Racal's protocol test cases

Radio Frequency Investigation and Racal Instruments have agreed to embark upon a co-operation agreement that will be of significant benefit to the 3G industry.

As part of the agreement Racal Instruments are to supply the 3G (UMTS- FDD) 6401 terminal test system that RFI will use to launch its 3G services.

RFI will validate Racal's protocol test cases and present results both on its website and in the relevant 3G terminal compliance forums.

RFI will take delivery of the test platform later this year and expects to be able to offer 3G testing services during early 2002.

Richard Jacklin, RFI's operations director commented, "RFI is committed to being at the forefront of 3G technology and recognises the significance of validation work in contributing to the industry as a whole.

We are currently working on six validation contracts and our broad experience and in-depth knowledge in this arena means that our track-record is second to none.

RFI's expertise and know-how will ensure that the Racal test system will gain an important industry stamp of approval." Greg Maton, Business Director Radio Communications Test at Racal Instruments said, "Racal Instruments has been developing a range of 3G test solutions to ensure that the new 3G technologies will have a full range of industry-approved test equipment to satisfy our customers' needs throughout their product and service development lifecycles.

The agreement with RFI confirms the contribution that we are making to the successful introduction of the next generation of cellular telecommunications." RFI and Racal intend to expand the scope of the agreement in future to include further validation opportunities for GSM/GPRS/UMTS test cases and interoperability testing.
