RFI has completed its first SAR test project for a major telecommunications company following the delivery of its new phantom from Swiss supplier Schmid and Partner

Radio Frequency Investigation (RFI) has completed its first SAR test project for a major telecommunications company following the delivery of its new phantom from Swiss supplier Schmid and Partner last month.

The new phantom's design enables easier and more repeatable positioning of mobile handsets and was commissioned to help manufacturers meet the latest SAR testing requirements.

The harmonised standard EN 50360 published in July this year, is the Product Standard which manufacturers must now follow to demonstrate compliance of mobile phones with basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields in the range 300 MHz to 3 GHz.

It is potentially more demanding than previous standards and refers to new test procedures and measurements to demonstrate compliance with Article 3.1A of the RTTE Directive.

The test procedure specifies more detailed SAR measurements and reinforces the importance of SAR measurements and the role they play in giving confidence regarding the health and safety of mobile phones.

In addition to RFI's appointment as a Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB), recognised by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States earlier in the year, RFI is now able to carry out SAR report evaluations for cellular and PCS handsets.

RFI can now review applications and issue grants on behalf of the FCC for cellular and PCS handsets under 47 CFR Part 22 Subpart H and Part 24.
