Reduction gears aim for slewable applications
Series 2000 slew drive reduction gears from Reggiana Riduttori are especially designed for slewable equipment like cranes, excavators and loaders.
It is also planning a £1/2 million purpose-built factory development.
Reggiana Riduttori UK will benefit immediately from the newly-developed Series 2000 range of linear, right angled, foot- and shaft-mounted reduction gearboxes, wheel, track and slew drives, and matched disk brakes.
Thanks to advanced CAD/CAM methodology and precision manufacturing techniques, the new series offers superior performance and efficiency within the same ultra-compact dimensions as the previous range, at the same time promising improved durability, lower operating noise and a highly-competitive pricing structure.
OEM's and end users will also be able to exploit the inherent light weight, small footprint, outstanding efficiency and design flexibility of these modular planetary gear units.
The three main directors of the UK operation, Chris Woodhead, Stephen Lund and Bernie Donohue, are all qualified mechanical engineers and have extensive power transmission industry experience.

Chris Woodhead (42) of Ilkley, who was previously MD of Elram International and is also a director of Advanced Component Technology Limited (ACTL), will have overall responsibility for marketing; Stephen Lund (43) of Cullingworth near Haworth, also ex-Elram and an ACTL director, will look after technical sales support and finance; while Bernie Donohue (50) of Warrington, Cheshire, who was formerly sales manager with Shackleton Engineering and has in-depth technical knowledge of the RR gearbox range, will handle sales and specifying into OEM's and end users.
"We all know the RR brand well and feel it has tremendous extra market potential," says Chris Woodhead.
"The products have an excellent reputation for quality and durability, so with the manufacturer's technical and financial backing, we are confident of making significant market inroads and building a more realistic brand share in the UK and Ireland." The modern RR Italy plant in Reggio Emilia currently employs 130 staff and has 10,000 square metres of production floorspace, with an additional 1500m2 scheduled in 2002.
Dedicated production cells and other modern manufacturing techniques, including extensive CAD/CAM systems, are employed throughout the factory and internal operations, such as turning, drilling, gear cutting, shaving, testing and packaging, are carried out to ISO9001 and other international quality standards.
There is also an in-house prototyping and application testing laboratory.
With a 30 year manufacturing history, Reggiana Riduttori has now emerged as a global market leader in power transmission, last year recording a turnover of 20 million Euro and this year is expected to rise to 25 million.
The company already has twelve directly-owned branch locations in Italy, Holland, Slovakia, Canada, Brazil and the USA, as well as an international network of official distributors.
Its new UK operation will hold in-depth stocks valued upwards of ?100k in West Yorkshire and, exploiting the modular construction of Series 2000, will have the capacity to build bespoke drive solutions up to 600,000Nm, from proven standard components.
There is also the option of fully integrated gearbox/motor drive packages, employing Staffa hydraulic motors supplied by associate company ACTL.
In addition to drawing product direct from the manufacturer in Italy, the UK company also has access to RR's European distribution hub in Holland, enabling it to offer lead times as low as 2/3 days where necessary.
It is particularly targeting the mining, quarrying, marine, offshore, environmental, materials handling and processing industries, offering a complete design, build, testing, servicing and repair capability.
The proposed move to purpose-built industrial premises nearby will enable Reggiana Riduttori UK to match its in-house resources to anticipated market demand.
