Proximity sensors come with ATEX
certification

In the future, all sensors used in hazardous areas, will require ATEX certification These new regulations do not just apply to the area of hazardous fumes but also to that of dust ignition, previously covered by StEx sensors

From 30th June 2003 all sensors used in StEx dust ignition areas must be certified to the new ATEX guidelines.

The dust ignition areas cover Zones 20, 21 and 22, and combustible dust maybe anything from sawdust through flour to coffee powder.

Rechner's range of capacitive proximity sensors already includes devices certified StEx "for use in explosion danger areas with combustible dust", and these are now available with ATEX certification.

The range comprise Namur models which have to be used with intrinsically safe amplifiers to fulfil the category1D as well as three- or four-wire proximity sensors with PNP or NPN output, which for example can communicate with all common PLCs.

The latter have a supply voltage range of 10 to 30V DC and in the area of the active surface (sensing head) they fulfil the requirements for category 1D.

Therefore they are particularly designed for mounting in a container wall where inside the container may be zone 20 but a lesser zone might apply outside the walls of the vessel.

This means that despite the fact that the active face has to conform to the requirements for category 1D the sensor does not need a remote amplifier, whereas with Namur models, working in conjunction with a remote amplifier, the complete sensor can be mounted within the silo.

Several thread versions are available, M30 x 1.5; M32 x 1.5; 1in and 1in NPT with different housing materials.

The selection of the correct material is dependent on the media to be detected.

The versions with stainless-steel housings and with PTFE sensing heads have become established as standard within the field of bulk materials.
