Options Technology commissioned a blueprint for a cooling water pipe work system, but it required a specialist in pipework fabrication, installation and testing to supply and install the system.

Richard Alan Engineering has delivered savings of approximately GBP 19,000 on the cooling system pipework for the new Options Technology data centre in West London.

This represents a saving of around 10% of the total cost.

The work included, 3D modelling, fabrication, installation, testing and commissioning of the cooling water pipework system using 12, 10, 6, 4, 3 and 2in carbon steel pipe, valves and fittings.

The Options Technology data centre addresses the critical shortage of data centre space in London, providing the higher power and cooling density required by the latest developments in computing technology.

The data centre offers power and cooling scalable from 2 to 30kW per rack and facilitates modern server and storage technologies and footprint savings.

As part of its design for the data centre, Options Technology had commissioned a blueprint for a cooling water pipe work system, but the company required a specialist in pipe work fabrication, installation and testing to supply and install the system.

Richard Alan Engineering was located via an internet search.

The company was contacted and a visit by Operations Director, Edward Jennings, was arranged.

"I visited site, reviewed their specification and advised areas of major cost saving through previous experience, particularly of process cooling systems", Jennings said.

"These savings could be achieved through revision of the original wall thickness proposed for the pipe work system and through a change in the supplier of the control valves".

"The benefit to the customer of these revisions was a saving of approximately GBP 19,000".

"We then went away and quoted the work".

"Subsequently, because we were the most pro-active contractor and our price was competitive, we were awarded the contract".

"In total, the project took approximately 14 weeks from our first visit to site to practical completion".
