At the London Datacenter Dynamics 2009 Conference, Rittal and Microsoft will introduce their partnership that aims to significantly optimise energy consumption within the data centre.
Rizone, Rittal's IT management software, along with Microsoft's System Centre Operations Manager (SCOM) - represents commercial software that extends beyond the infrastructure components and allows the power consumption monitoring of all devices enabling real energy savings to be achieved.
Rizone monitors and controls the cooling from chillers, computer room air-conditioning (CRAC) systems, liquid cooling packages, free cooling and power supplies such as UPS, power distribution and so on, along with energy use and other physical parameters such as temperature and access or security of a data centre.
Microsoft's SCOM monitors the performance of the server and provides an event display and event evaluations.
Through this collaboration, Rittal has created an essential management pack that facilitates the sharing of data between IT infrastructure and servers.
Rizone and SCOM, through integrated communication, enables the physical services to be automatically scaled up and down depending on the IT demand - with no impact on resilience or downtime.
If demand within the application layer is higher, the software interacts with the physical layer to provide what is needed, for example, more power or more cooling.
Conversely if IT demand is low, the physical layer can effectively hibernate, which can reduce power consumption.
A holistic view of the overall network infrastructure is provided via the SCOM graphical user interface.
