Six giant clutches are on their way to Italy after Cardiff based Renold Clutches and Couplings manufactured them from scratch in less than 14 weeks Together, the huge, backstop sprag-clutches weigh over 7t, with the larger of the two sizes produced standing almost 1m off the ground
Four of the clutches have an internal bore of 350mm and the other two have a bore of 220mm.
They are among the largest of their type ever to be produced by the firm and will replace equivalent units they supplied over 10 years ago.
The clutches will be fitted on large belt conveyors feeding the furnaces at a steelworks near Bari in south-eastern Italy.
As sprag clutches only run in one direction they will provide an integral safety feature by preventing the heavy-duty conveyors from running backwards and causing damage to machinery and possible injury to people.
