Big housing estate order for burner

The London Borough of Lambeth, through its Design Technical Services department, is the first UK customer to specify Riello's new Modubloc burner for gas-fired central heating, provided to approximately four hundred properties at its Angell Town housing estate The performance and reliability of a Riello burner fitted to an earlier boiler had so impressed the specifiers that the Huntingdon-based company was again contracted to fulfil the 4,000 kW output required
The boilers supply five localised heat exchanger plant rooms experiencing variable load demand, so the burner has to accurately match changing heat requirements throughout the year.
To achieve this, Riello installed their Modubloc MB 4SE gas burner, which features a micro-modulation system as standard and incorporates a load sensor to monitor output water temperature and continuously regulate the burner controls accordingly.
Significantly, the process involves no mechanical linkages, removing a source of wear that can harm operating efficiency by several percent over time.
Instead, precision stepper motors directly adjust the airflow dampers and fuel input according to reference curves, programmed to match boiler characteristics during burner commissioning.
Most burner installations of this output are supplied as separate units - burner head, fan and control box.
By contrast, the Modubloc burner's monobloc construction combines all necessary components in a single package mounted on the burner itself.
This presented Lambeth with advantages for installation, safety, maintenance and performance.
The installer had only to connect the fuel and electrical supplies to the burner after mounting to the boiler, all other wiring having been completed and tested at the Riello factory.
Maintenance is a one-man job, as simple as removing a cover and hinging the burner open to gain access to all service components without removing the burner from the boiler.
Operating efficiency is enhanced by innovations like the electronic control of air and fuel and a compact, low-noise, reverse-curve bladed axial fan.
Riello's Modubloc range covers the 4,000 to 10,000 kW output requirements of the commercial and industrial sectors.
Energy managers of large installations can achieve additional benefits via extension modules: Data Transfer Interface enables control of the combustion system by remote PC; Intelligent Boiler Sequencing provides for connection of up to ten burners working in parallel and distributes total thermal load among available boilers.
For additional energy savings, the Exhaust Gas Analyser module monitors exhaust gas composition and modulates the burner to minimise pollutant emissions, while an Interface Inverter varies fan speed with load, allowing low-fire mode burner operation when demand is less.
The combination of these measures can result in around five percent energy saving over traditional burners.
The Angell Town installation was overseen by Lambeth Design Technical Services' Tyrone Carswell, and has fully lived up to expectations after nine months' operation.
"The Modubloc burner has been totally reliable, regardless of season or demand", says Carswell.
"The low operating costs help us to make the most of our budgets too.".
