Signal convertor takes control of burners

A Riello product story

A low-voltage signal convertor for interfacing burners with building management systems is the latest innovation to emerge from the product development team at Riello.

A low-voltage signal convertor for interfacing burners with building management systems is the latest innovation to emerge from the product development team at Riello.

This novel approach replaces the transformer, potentiometer and signal convertor of a conventional control with a single unit measuring a nominal 100 x 70 x 30mm, giving at least 90% reduction in the installation space required.

The integral design contains all components required to accept the incoming 0-10V signal from the building management system, and convert it to an output suitable for driving the servo motors that regulate the butterfly valves in the gas and air supplies to the burner.

The new signal convertor simplifies burner construction, as the compact size allows it to be prewired and mounted on the burner, providing cost savings in parts and labour that are passed on to the customer.

Installation engineers benefit too, as commissioning of the signal converter is simplified to a process of measuring firing times and setting the DIP switches on the unit accordingly.

Reliability is improved by virtue of the reduced number of component parts, and by the incorporation of multiple onboard memories for data storage and recall, filters to absorb electrical spikes, and inbuilt fail-safe protection that returns the burner to its minimum firing position in the event of a fault.

After 18 months of extended trials there have been no failures during service, not even in a particularly demanding application where Riello burners are used to heat a paint-spraying booth in a busy vehicle repair shop.

In this installation, spot-welding takes place continually adjacent to the burners, and although this operation generates severe electrical noise, performance of the new signal convertor has not been adversely affected.

The low-voltage signal convertor is suitable for fitting to any application, particularly equipment using smaller burners, where its compactness and ease of commissioning are distinct advantages.

If required, the unit can be retrofitted in the field with ease.
