UK engineering will benefit from multidisciplinary research by experienced academic engineers with no loss to the teaching of the next generation of engineers within universities.
All of the fields of engineering will be represented: from traditional areas such as civil, electrical, mechanical and process engineering to materials technology, biomedical engineering and informatics.
The Leverhulme Trust, established at the wish of William Hesketh Lever, the first Viscount Leverhulme, makes awards for the support of research and education.
The trust emphasises the crucial contribution of individuals and encompasses all subject areas.
The Royal Academy of Engineering Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships will be awarded to institutions rather than individual applicants and will be undertaken by the fellows themselves, not by or for the trust.
In the first year, more than GBP 235,000 has been granted for the establishment of the seven new fellowships.
Professor Rodney Eatock Taylor, Chairman of The Academy's Research and Secondments Committee, said: "The academy is committed to encouraging excellence in all aspects of engineering, and establishing senior research fellowships with the Leverhulme Trust is a significant step in furthering this objective".
"These new fellowships will complement the academy's existing successful schemes for 5-year chairs and fellowships".
"We hope to attract applications from highly talented and motivated engineering academic staff".
"The first call will be this summer".
