Lord Alec Broers, President of The Royal Academy of Engineering, has responded to this week's UK budget statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Lord Alec Broers, President of The Royal Academy of Engineering and Chair of House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has responded to this week's UK budget statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

On the Research Assessment Exercise, Lord Broers said: "The RAE has outlived its usefulness and become a constraint on the country's innovation performance".

"So today's decision to look for its successor is good news".

"But we must get it right".

"We need a system that recognises the sort of research that leads to new products and services that have value to society, as well as the good science that ends up in science journals".

On the proposal for plot programme of 250 after school science clubs, he stated: "Our future lies in the hands of today's young people and so we must find effective ways of engaging their interest in science and engineering so that they can see how much of a difference they can make if they pursue science studies at school".

"If these new science clubs can follow the lead established by the 1500 Young Engineers Clubs and other schemes in the Academy's Best Programme, then they will be able to make a difference".
