Engineering Leadership Awards, each worth up to £7500, from the Royal Academy of Engineering have been presented to 21 students, identified as the engineering leaders of the future.

Engineering Leadership Awards (ELAs) from the Royal Academy of Engineering have been presented to 21 students, identified as the engineering leaders of the future.

Each award is worth up to £7500.

The 21 winners have been chosen from more than 120 who applied for the award from throughout the UK - and one of less than 300 winners since the ELAs began.

The awards have been organised by the Royal Academy of Engineering each year since 1996.

The awards aim to accelerate each winner's personal and professional development, preparing them for a fast-track career in UK industry.

Matthew Harrison, Director of the Best Programme for the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: "Congratulations to all our ELA winners".

"They represent the elite of UK engineering students and the Royal Academy of Engineering is proud to have the opportunity to support them in their academic efforts".

"The awards also encourage ambition and a spirit of leadership among the country's most able engineering undergraduates".

"With this year's winners we have once again succeeded in identifying individuals who have the desire and the capability to reach the very top of the engineering world".

"And they have captured our imagination with much more than just academic ability".

ELA winners will each receive a cheque for £500 at the start of each academic year during the next three years.

The winners can also request additional funds for proposals - for a placement for example - and the funds available will increase over time from £1000 in the first year to as much as £3000 in the third year of the award.

But the award isn't just about money.

The academy also organises an annual training and social weekend at which all the award holders from the different year groups are brought together for networking.

The winners will now be required to draft a personal development plan outlining how they hope to make the most of the opportunity.
