A 10-day programme of around 2000 events throughout the UK, celebrating science, engineering and technology and their importance in our lives, has been launched
Lord Browne of Madingley, President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and also of The Royal Academy of Engineering, today launched National Science and Engineering Week, the BA's 10-day programme of around 2000 events throughout the UK, celebrating science, engineering and technology and their importance in our lives.
Inspired by the huge global response to the efforts of people like Bob Geldof and Bono, Lord Browne says: "What they have done is a remarkable demonstration of the capacity of technology to bring people together, and a stunning example of the continued importance of values and aspiration".
"Our challenge is to provide the next layer of change - the people who can go beyond ideas and visions and make a practical difference".
"I believe that is what engineering is all about and why I say that if you want to change the world - be an engineer".
The Royal Academy of Engineering is involved in a number of initiatives during the week including partnering the University of Southampton on several events and the launch of a case study booklet of engineers with NESTA in Nottingham.
There is also a full programme of events organised by the London Engineering Project for their schools and a professional development day for teachers at the London Eye where they can build a model of the wheel.
Professor Matthew Harrison, Director of Education Programmes at The Royal Academy of Engineering comments, "Practical solutions to big problems come when good science is properly engineered".

"A week when the combination of science and engineering is celebrated from the top of the UK to the bottom".
"For too long people have seen science as remote and difficult and engineering as something old-fashioned and a bit dull".
"But when they are brought together, solving tough practical problems that people really care about, then suddenly both science and engineering come alive".
