Disc lasers shine in Munich

At Laser 2003 in Munich, Rofin presented a number of new products from all areas including its novel 'disc laser' technology.

At Laser 2003 in Munich, Rofin presented a number of new products from all areas including its novel 'disc laser' technology The Rofin Macro Group focuses on laser beam sources and laser-based systems for industrial application involving CO2, diode and solid-state lasers with a high output power for cutting, welding and surface treatment

Adding to the product range of successful CO2 Slab lasers is the new high-power Rofin DC 050 W model.

This diffusion-cooled laser achieves an output power of 5kW.

It is primarily designed for welding tasks requiring considerable weld depths or involving a long focal distance, such as required for large-scale remote welding systems for car body parts in the automotive industry.

In addition to the near Gaussian mode structure of the CO2 Slab series, there is now a doughnut mode option available for welding applications resulting in an increased welding seam width.

This laser is equipped with special internal optics increasing the focus diameter of the laser beam at a given focal distance by a factor of two.

This results in highly reliable weld joints even for parts with larger tolerances.

Thanks to their excellent beam quality, the lasers of the Slab series (more than 2000 of these instruments are being used worldwide for cutting and welding tasks) lend themselves even to ultrafine applications, such as perforating cigarette filter paper at 500,000 holes per second.

Today the Laser Micro unit of the Rofin Group is using this laser type exclusively for high-speed perforation systems.

In the field of solid-state lasers, Rofin presented a breakthrough with the Rofin DS 015 HQ model, a diode-pumped disc laser with an output power of 1500W.

Disc lasers are diode-pumped Yb:YAG solid-state lasers characterised by an electrical efficiency of approximately 20% and an increased beam quality.

The 1500W DS-HQ laser beam may be coupled into a fibre with a core diameter of 150um, while the higher power version with an output power of 3000W is used in combination with a 300um fibre.

This makes it possible to realise 750W output power at a beam quality of 7mm x mrad or 1500W at a beam quality of 12mm x mrad with a single disc.

When coupling two discs, the output power may be doubled without loss of beam quality.

Primary areas of application for these lasers today include high-speed welding of thin materials, welding with scanner optics, as well as cutting of hyper-fine contours. Request a free brochure from Rofin-Baasel UK ...
