Couplings are crucial to temporary power

Halifax-based Renold Hi-Tec Couplings has helped provide temporary power for what is claimed to be the world's largest floating oil production, storage and off-loading (FPSO) unit, while the vessel was under construction.

The West Yorkshire manufacturer supplied five RB 3.86 flexible rubber-in-compression transmission couplings for generator sets used on the 343,000 tonne vessel at the Hyundai shipyard in South Korea.

Renold Hi-Tec RB couplings are incorporated in a large number of generator sets, which were supplied during the construction and commissioning phase of the vessel by Aggreko, an international company specialising in the supply of temporary electrical power.

The couplings link a Cummins KTA 50 diesel engine and a Newage 734 alternator in each of the sets, which were part of a 5MW, 11kV temporary power contract that Aggreko supplied as a complete turnkey package.

Aggreko generators serve a global market, supplying easily portable, temporary power systems throughout the world.

For such rigorous work, Aggreko generator sets are designed to be extremely reliable under the harshest conditions, unaffected by climatic change, and almost impervious to possible abuse and lack of servicing by the user.

Renold Hi-Tec Couplings provide vital "fail-safe" protection for such equipment, reducing loadings on the prime mover and alternator, ensuring longer bearing life and extending overall unit life.

The RB series, used in the FPSO application, is a general purpose, cost-effective range of couplings available in either shaft-to-shaft or flywheel-to-shaft configurations with a maximum torque of 41kNm.

The couplings can be supplied with a wide range of rubber grades and harnesses, which allows them to be used to control resonant torsional vibration, resulting in low vibratory loads in driveline components.

They are in use in a wide range of applications, including generator and pump sets, compressor sets, metal manufacture, pulp and paper, and many other general-purpose applications.

Renold Hi-Tec's flame resistant fail-safe couplings are fitted on board many FPSOs and offshore drilling rigs.
