Couplings cut down on paper wastage

A Renold Hi-Tec Couplings product story

The installation of Renold Hi-Tec PM18 couplings in the drive train of a large capacity paper winder at a leading Scottish paper mill has eliminated backlash in the system.

The installation of Renold Hi-Tec PM18 couplings in the drive train of a large capacity paper winder at a leading Scottish paper mill has eliminated backlash in the system and led to a dramatic reduction in instances of paper breakage at the plant.

Paper breakages at Caledonian Paper of Irvine, Ayrshire, a large high quality paper producer in the UK, had become a recurrent problem.

The root cause was identified as the accumulative effect of mechanical wear and backlash in the winder drive's gearbox gear and coupling, allowing the paper to "snatch" as the winder decelerates.

Breakages not only result in lost production, but also cause considerable rework as quality control considerations permit only one breakage in any paper reel.

If a second breakage occurs the reel has to be fully rewound.

Caledonian Paper, in close co-operation with its maintenance contractor Wyko Industrial Services and Renold Hi-Tec's application team, decided to fit backlash free PM18 couplings to rectify the problem.

The decision was reinforced by a recommendation from Caledonian's sister plant, the Rauma Mill in Finland.

Rauma has also fitted PM18 couplings on its winders as well as PM180 and PM270 couplings to its refiner drives - with excellent results.

Thus in April 2002, the company's two JR 1000 winders were each fitted with four of Renold Hi-Tec backlash free PM18 couplings.

Since that time the number of breakages have been considerably reduced as has the coupling maintenance, with plant operation maintained around-the-clock.

The PM range of couplings is specially designed for heavy industrial applications up to 6000kNm, providing exceptional protection against severe shock loads and vibration.

Torque amplifications are eliminated through pre-compression of the coupling's rubber elements while continuous operation is still assured even in the unlikely event of rubber failure or other damage.

The PM coupling requires no lubrication or adjustment.

The standard range comprises shaft-to-shaft, flange-to-shaft, mill motor coupling and brake drum coupling configurations.

Applications include metal manufacture, mining and mineral manufacture, pumps, fans, compressors, cranes and hoists, pulp and paper industry and general heavy duty industrial applications.

Due to the operational success of the PM18 couplings on the winder drives, Caledonian Paper intends to install Renold Hi-Tec couplings in other parts of its plant.
