Controller-I/O with integrated field
termination

The Allen-Bradley FlexLogix distributed control system combines the Logix control engine with Allen-Bradley FLEX I/O, to create a controller and I/O system with integrated field termination

Rockwell Automation introduces a new member to its Logix family of control systems The Allen-Bradley FlexLogix distributed control system combines the Logix control engine with Allen-Bradley FLEX I/O, to create a controller and I/O system with integrated field termination, ideal for distributed control applications

"Manufacturers want to apply a controller that's best suited to the particular situation, but can't afford the time and cost of learning multiple systems", said Richard Sturt, business manager Control and Information Group, Rockwell Automation.

"Our strategy provides a single development environment and common control technology across multiple form factors and disciplines.

FlexLogix is an important product in the Logix Platforms architecture." Users can mount the FlexLogix controller on a DIN rail in close proximity to the point of application.

This reduces expensive I/O wiring by enabling communication with the rest of the plant's control architecture via a single network cable.

In addition FLEX I/O has integrated termination for field wiring allowing customers to wire directly to FLEX I/O without the need for additional terminals.

This results in significant reductions in both the cost and the amount of space required.

FlexLogix employs the same Rockwell Software RSLogix 5000 programming package as the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix multi-discipline controller, so users can move easily from one application to another without additional training.

It allows users to cut, copy and paste between different controller programs, providing the ability to re-use programming from other Logix applications.

Highly intuitive I/O wizards walk the user through the configuration of a module.

All information is presented in easily understood forms to reduce the learning burden on operators.

"Our customers want to further distribute control and streamline engineering and maintenance costs," adds Richard Sturt.

"FlexLogix provides a cost-effective way to use the benefits of FLEX I/O and offers the same look and feel as other Allen-Bradley Logix controllers.

The FlexLogix 5430 controller will be available in one- or two- FlexBUS configurations with up to eight modules per rail.

FlexLogix supports ControlNet communications and also has a built-in RS-232 port.

The I/O capacity of the new FlexLogix processor is designed for up to 256 local I/O points and up to 256 additional I/O in a networked configuration.

The new FlexLogix controller supports Rockwell Automation's integrated architecture strategy to deliver interoperability across platforms for faster installation, lower total cost of ownership, and increased flexibility, meeting the needs of a wide range of applications.
