New machine-level controllers from
Allen-Bradley

Designed for machine-level applications, the first two models in the Allen-Bradley CompactLogix programmable controller range support 8 and 16 Compact I/O modules, for 128 and 256 local I/O points

Rockwell Automation is introducing the Allen-Bradley CompactLogix programmable controller for machine-level applications CompactLogix is designed for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users seeking solutions with limited I/O count and communications capabilities for applications such as packaging and conveyors

CompactLogix L20 and L30 are the first two members of a new controller family that drives the powerful Allen-Bradley Logix technology into a smaller, lower cost platform.

"CompactLogix is perfect for OEMs who want a lower cost solution for applications requiring the flexibility of a small, modular design," said Richard Sturt, Rockwell Automation business unit manager.

"CompactLogix supports all shared Logix functions and execution models, and is intended for smaller systems with limited communications and I/O count requirements." The latest addition to the Allen-Bradley Logix platforms family, CompactLogix is part of a complete system-level architecture that uses the same Logix control engine shared by ControlLogix, FlexLogix and SoftLogix.

CompactLogix also employs the same Rockwell Software RSLogix 5000 programming package as the other Allen-Bradley Logix platforms.

This allows users to move easily from one application to another with minimal additional program development or training.

"RSLogix 5000 creates a control environment with a single look and feel from one controller to the next," said Richard Sturt.

"The multiple programming language support of RSLogix 5000, including ladder and function block programming capabilities, provides users with programming flexibility to meet the demands of a wide variety of applications." A built-in RS-232 programming port in the L20 (the L30 has two) provides direct connection for programming, operator interface devices and ASCII devices, as well as dial-in remote programming.

By using a SCADA protocol, it allows for networking of up to 255 devices, using radio or leased line modems for remote programming, monitoring and data acquisition.

CompactLogix also offers connection to DH-485, DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP external network interfaces.

With the DH-485 network interface, CompactLogix can be connected to a network of up to 32 devices.

The DeviceNet network interface provides a connection to a network of up to 64 devices with slave I/O, peer-to-peer messaging and data exchange, in addition to program upload/download.

The Ethernet/IP interface provides a connection for programming and data collection.

Because it uses the Compact I/O form factor, CompactLogix offers a truly scalable solution.

The CompactLogix L20 processor supports eight Compact I/O modules, for up to 128 local I/O points and the L30 supports sixteen I/O modules for up to 256 local I/O points.

The modular and rackless design saves panels space and reduces costs.

I/O modules can be removed and inserted from the front giving simple initial assembly and easy module replacement during maintenance. Request a free brochure from Rockwell Automation ...
