Contactors and relays give ultimate motor safety

Allen-Bradley's new contactors and contactor relays have mechanically linked positively guided contacts and are typically installed as Isolation Contactors to ensure a motor is completely isolated

Rockwell Automation introduces a range of Allen-Bradley contactors and contactor relays with 'mechanically linked' positively guided contacts.

These are defined in IEC 947-5-1 as a combination of normally open and normally closed contact elements, designed in such a way that they cannot be in the closed position simultaneously, thereby providing error free signalling.

These devices are typically installed as Isolation Contactors and used to ensure a motor is completely isolated.

The normally closed contacts can also be used for cross-interlocking control systems or contactors, where the operation of device due to an erroneous signal, could cause a fault condition or have safety implications for the operator.

They provide definitive status of the device to a Safety Relay, PLC, control system or indicating light.

The Allen-Bradley range of 100S/104S Safety Contactors comprises 3 pole, direct-on-line and reversing contactors and 700S Safety Control, 8 pole relays.

All feature 'Mechanically Linked' positively guided contacts.

The new ranges have been extensively tested by Rockwell Automation to ensure compliance with the requirements of the 'Mechanically Linked contact specification' as well as mechanical and electrical endurance.

They meet IEC 947-5-1 for Mechanically Linked contacts, IEC 947-4-1 Mirror Contact requirements and GM DHS-1 'Design for Safety' requirements as well as being SUVA Third Party Certified to IEC 947-5-1.

All have permanently fixed front-mount auxiliary contact blocks, enabling them to be factory tested prior to despatch.

The contact housing is coloured red for easy identification.

A protective cover prevents manual operation whilst allowing ON/OFF status to be checked via a window.

They are marked with the distinctive IEC 947-5-1 'Mechanically Linked' Symbol.

The range includes contactor relays with a choice of 4 N/O and 4 N/C, 5 N/O and 3 N/C or 6 N/O and 2 N/C contact configurations.

Contactors are available in 10 different frame sizes covering the range from 9 to 85 Amps (up to 45 kW), AC-3 duty or up to 100 A, AC-1 duty with a choice of N/C and N/O auxiliary contacts.

They can be supplied with AC or DC operating coils and are compatible with the Modular Control System (MCS) range of components and accessories.

The introduction of the Allen-Bradley range of Safety Contactors and Relays provides an enhanced level of safety for machine operators and critical plant.

They overcome problems caused by the welding together of the main contacts on contactors and relays, which can cause potentially hazardous conditions and provide an essential additional safeguard for critical plant and machinery.
