Geo Robson is close to completing a four-stage upgrade for United Sugar Company's Jeddah plant, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world.

Owned by Saudi-based Savola Group, the plant was the kingdom's first sugar refinery, with capacity due to increase towards one million tons per year, it will be close to meeting home demand.

The first phase started in Autumn 2002, and the fourth phase will be completed by Winter 2003.

Designed to handle both wet and dry sugar in both coarse and fine forms, the equipment includes screw conveyors, bucket elevators and belt conveyors, all manufactured and customised to the client's requirements in food-quality stainless steel.

The equipment supplied by Robson is to replace older equipment, which could not meet the need for expanded production, as well as providing additional routes in the plant.

The bucket elevator and conveyor design incorporates the latest thinking to improve ease of maintenance, operation and reliability of performance.
