An order Saudi Oger placed with Geo Robson called for two powered roller conveyors that could withstand loads of up to 350kg, with a specific straight-sided diabolo pattern.

A contract recently completed by mechanical handling specialist Geo Robson demonstrated the company's ability to meet exceptional specifications The order, from construction-to-utilities group Saudi Oger, called for two powered roller conveyors - familiar pieces of handling equipment, except that they had to withstand loads of up to 350kg and the rollers had to be to a specific straight-sided diabolo pattern

The special rollers and high loading were necessary because the conveyors were for handling oil transfer pipes brought ashore for maintenance from oil rigs.

The cross-section of the diabolo rollers makes sure that the cylindrical pipes sit securely on the conveyors as they are transported.

Because diabolo rollers to this pattern are not standard items, Robson had to have them manufactured - 26 in total, each 1m wide and 400mm in diameter at the widest point.

Metal spinning, the first option considered, was found to be unsuitable because it could not ensure the necessary strength, so instead they had to be pressed and rolled.

The two 10m-long conveyors have been installed in the workshop of the Al Khafji oil refinery, on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the neutral zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The project is a further diversification of Robson's activities in the Middle East, which have already included systems for gold ore, sugar and baggage handling.
