Training cuts unnecessary airport delays

A Robson Handling Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 15, 2008

The training Robson's provided included basic troubleshooting and identifying photo electric cell faults, and how to quickly restart the conveyors after a fault or an emergency stop.

Airport delays are often complex breakdowns that require hours of maintenance and expert engineers to solve the problems.

Delays can also be caused when a simple device has tripped out or a bag blockage has occurred and been cleared, but the operator does not know how to restart the system, leading to unnecessary delays.

The delay is often confounded by waiting for the electrical or engineering staff to arrive often from opposite sides of the airfield or through the warren of corridors and security checks to press the relevant button.

Managers at Leeds Bradford International Airport recognised this problem could easily be prevented and asked Robson Handling Technology to help train airport ground staff and security personnel in the simple reset procedures to ensure the system is up and running with the minimum of delay.

The training Robson's provided included basic troubleshooting and identifying photo electric cell faults, and how to quickly restart the conveyors after a fault or an emergency stop.

The training was followed by a site tour, although all the staff were familiar with the airport surroundings and equipment, most did not know how the control panels were activated, or what the warning lights or beacons were indicating.

Phil Gee, Maintenance and Facilities Manager at Leeds Bradford International Airport said: "From the simple instructions given by the Robson tutors, everyone on the course gained the knowledge and more importantly the confidence to diagnose problems quickly and reset the system without the frustrating passenger delays".
