Work experience leads to apprenticeship

A Robson Handling Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 26, 2008

Joseph Smith has joined Robson's Modern Apprenticeship programme, where his training will involve all aspects of engineering, design and manufacture of materials handling equipment.

Sheffield based materials handling company Geo Robson and Co (Conveyors) has always believed in providing work experience for young students, giving the next generation a taste of what it is like working as an engineer or draughtsman - hopefully helping them to decide on career within engineering.

In July 2007 Joseph Smith of Bradfield School joined the Robson Drawing Office for two weeks work experience.

Although shy at first, he quickly found his feet and started to appreciate the design and engineering tasks that he was given.

A definite thirst for knowledge impressed seasoned engineers who took him under their wing, within the end of the first week Smith had tackled the AutoCAD drawing package, design and structural calculations plus various desktop publishing and photographic packages.

The management team at Robson decided that Smith would be a very good addition to the team and that he showed great promise.

After completing his exams and finishing school in August, Smith has joined Robson's Modern Apprenticeship programme.

His training will involve all aspects of engineering, design and manufacture of materials handling equipment.

Smith is absolutely delighted with this opportunity and is looking forward to starting work.

Jason Sharland Drawing Office Manager said: "It was a pleasure to work with Joe on his work experience; we are looking forward to him being an active member of the team".

"Robson have up to four placements for work experience students a year".

"Joe is the first to gain an apprenticeship as a direct result of work experience and hopefully not the last".
