Easy upgrade for old worm gears

A Renold Gears product story

Customers of heavy-duty worm gears are being misled by some suppliers into believing that this type of unit is obsolete and no longer available in the UK.

So says Renold Gears of Rochdale at the launch of its "new-for-old" campaign, which offers engineers a brand new, interchangeable gearbox in exchange for an old unit produced by another manufacturer, and all for the cost of having the old one repaired.

The initiative is designed to make British engineers aware of the fact that although heavy-duty worm-gear units are virtually unobtainable from other manufacturers, they are still in production at Renold Gears' factory in Lancashire.

What's more, not only are they still being produced but the most popular sizes are available ex stock.

Renold Gears' TW range of heavy-duty worm-gear units are manufactured to BS standards and are interchangeable with those of other manufacturers.

The gears are cut to the unique Holroyd tooth-form for maximum capacity and optimum efficiency.

There are four standard types available with centre distances from 10 to 28in and with ratios from 5:1 to 70:1 for single reduction units, and from 75:1 to 4900:1 for double reduction units.

All incorporate metric, taper-roller bearings and the finest quality alloy steels for the worm-shafts with centrifugally cast, phosphor bronze rims for the worm wheels.

All units are fitted with Viton oil seals as standard and for extra protection in hostile environments a grease-packed labyrinth system, specially designed by Renold Gears, is also available.

The design of the TW range was significantly enhanced 10 years ago and the new units are capable of delivering 55% more torque than the original product.

Customers replacing gearboxes that are more than 10 years old will benefit from enhanced performance and a longer lifespan of the product.

Typical applications include: conveying, mining, timber, materials handling, packaging machinery, water treatment, foundry equipment as well as many other heavy-duty industrial applications.
