Hydraulic motors reduce headroom in platinum mines

A Rotary Power product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 7, 2003

Rotary Power has helped Boart Longyear to design a special hydraulic wheel drive application for blast hole drilling machines, operating in low seams in South African platinum mines.

Rotary Power and the mining and construction group Boart Longyear have enjoyed a close working relationship for many years.

Previous successful joint ventures include the development and subsequent subcontract manufacture of components for the BDS-HD series of rock drills, which are used throughout the world in some of the most arduous mining conditions.

Now liaison between Rotary Power, the only wholly owned UK company designing and manufacturing hydraulic piston pumps and motors and Boart Longyear (Poland) has brought about the design of a special hydraulic wheel drive application for blast hole drilling machines, operating in low seams in South African platinum mines.

By using Rotary Power 's modular XK40 cam motors to replace the previous mechanical wheel drive system, Boart Longyear has been able to significantly lower the overall height of the drilling machines, facilitating lower depths for the operating seams and thereby reducing operating costs.

The four XK40 5000cm3 wheel drive motors incorporated on the drilling machines include asymmetric two-speed function together with both dynamic and multiplate brake options.

Rotary Power's versatile XK range provides a viable competitively priced alternative to existing motors on the market.

The three frame sizes from 1000 to 5000cm3 offer exceptionable flexible configuration and custom-built opportunities for a full range of applications which encompass mining, construction, agriculture and forestry industries.

With the trend for greater road speeds, the high-speed capability available on the XK range is proving a particular benefit.
