Handbook of polymer testing

A Smithers Rapra product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Nov 13, 2002

A new series of handbooks aims to present an up-to-date account of polymer testing procedures in common (and not so common) use.

Knowledge of the properties of materials is essential for several purposes: design, specification, quality control, failure analysis and for understanding the structure and behaviour of new materials.

Specific test procedures evolve for each class of materials and their use helps to provide the most meaningful results and to allow comparison of data from different sources.

Rapra's new "Handbook of polymer testing" series aims to present an up-to-date account of polymer testing procedures which is comprehensive in covering all tests in common (and not so common) use.

Polymer testing is a very broad subject and to cover it all in one volume inevitably imposes restrictions of both scope and depth.

This work is structured in a series of parts, published separately, which is aimed to provide in total the widest possible scope with full coverage of each subject.

The handbook series is intended as a reference for those directly concerned with testing polymers in whatever capacity, from quality control to research, but will also be of value for students of materials technology and those indirectly involved in testing such as design engineers and technical specification writers.

The first part, "Handbook of polymer testing - short-term mechanical tests", concentrates on tests of mechanical properties where the effects of long periods of time and cycling are ignored.

This group includes hardness, tensile, compression, shear, flexing, impact and tear testing, and for this book it is also taken to include density and dimensional measurement together with test piece preparation and conditioning.

The author, Roger Brown, is an internationally acknowledged expert on physical testing and quality assurance of polymers.

He has published more than 70 technical papers and three standard textbooks on testing.

In addition, he is editor of the journal Polymer Testing and co-editor of the newsletter The Test Report.

He has over 25 years experience of running the testing laboratories and services at Rapra.

Brown is active on many standards committees.

The "Handbook of polymer testing - short-term mechanical tests" retails at GBP 80, US $124 or Eur 128 (plus postage and packaging).
