Polymer enhancement of technical textiles

A Smithers Rapra product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 22, 2003

A new review from Rapra Technology, "Polymer enhancement of technical textiles", examines the potential for these high performance speciality materials.

Technical textiles are high performance speciality materials.

Applications are found in inflatable structures, tents, as reinforcement in composites for construction, as body armour and vehicle protection, in filters, as a base for flexible printed circuits, hose, conveyor belts and tyres.

A new review from Rapra Technology, "Polymer enhancement of technical textiles", examines the potential for these materials.

The way in which the fabric is formed affects the dimensional strength and the coatability of the material.

Some of the different weave types are described in this review, together with the common methods of application of polymer to textiles.

Critical factors include the compatibility of the polymer treatments with the textile and the openness of the textile structure, which will determine the surface area available for adhesion.

Major applications areas are then considered: protective apparel, armour materials, gas transmission resistance (eg for environmental protection applications and inflatable products), construction and geotextiles, automotive and transportation.

Developmental projects include protective suits, where textiles are being treated with a polymer, which leaves an absorbent coating; when the suit is exposed to chemicals, the absorbent takes up the chemical thus protecting the wearer.

Textiles are also being made in adaptable forms, so that colours can be changed for camouflage purposes, insulation or conductivity.

Recyclability and green issues are driving the increased use of natural fibres, particularly in the automotive industry, also the use of similar fibre and matrix materials, eg polypropylene, so that the structure is simpler to recycle.

The future for polymer enhanced technical textiles is exciting, with emerging technologies for fabric and polymer surface treatments and alternative application media.

"Polymer enhancement of technical textiles" provides an overview of some of the key developments.

The review is accompanied by around 400 abstracts from papers and books in the Rapra Polymer Library database, to facilitate further reading on this subject.

A subject index and a company index are included.

The author, Roy Buckley, has worked on polymer treatment of technical textiles for several decades at John Heathcoat and Co, where he was Research and Development Manager for 15 years until his retirement in 2002.

He is currently an independent consultant, working across the globe to implement new developments.

"Polymer enhancement of technical textiles" retails at GBP 85 (plus postage and packaging) and is available from Rapra Technology.
