Shaft coupling extends life of drive systems

A Rotex Europe product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 15, 2006

In the 40 years since being launched onto the market, the Rotex jaw coupling has proven its worth as a universal, torsionally flexible shaft coupling compensating for shaft misalignment

The coupling extends the service life of drive systems and damping vibrations effectively The couplings application range includes the comfort drives, eg for headrests or boot lids of cars, precision applications in the main spindles of machine tools and heavy engineering.

KTR has an extended range of Rotex with temperature resistant elastomers.

The elastomer spider which is the positive connection between the two hubs ensuring torsional elasticity and - due to its special shape - the ability to compensate for misalignments may be produced from high temperature materials keeping their material characteristics even with ambient temperatures up to 250C.

They are also suitable for T3 applications with potential gas or dust explosions where surface temperatures up to 160C may be achieved on the spider.

Apart from their temperature resistance the new spider materials are characterised by resistance to wear over a wide range of pressure speed and temperature.

They are resistant to hydrolysis and chemicals and have good properties with dry operation.

Due to the existing variety of materials users may select for the special applications mentioned whether they prefer a hard elastomer for higher speeds or a soft elastomer with good damping properties.

Users may consult with the KTR design engineers for the material selection.

The design of the couplings is generally performed in accordance with DIN 740.

The Rotex jaw couplings are selected for more than one million load cycles and consequently suitable for drives with a higher shifting frequency.

The Poly-Norm coupling, which is common as an alternative to Rotex mainly in chemical and process engineering, is offered with spiders from highly temperature resistant elastomer materials.

Some of the typical applications of Rotex and Poly-Norm couplings with high temperature spiders are the glass industry, steel industry, process engineering, pump technology and applications were the standards of explosion protection apply.
