Environmental report wins international award
The Resource Efficiency KTN has received a prestigious international award for a report that it wrote about a recent DTI Global Watch Technology Mission to Japan.
The Resource Efficiency Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has received a prestigious international award in the category of Best Technical Literature of 2006 from the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) for a report that it wrote about a recent DTI Global Watch Technology Mission to Japan.
The award is given for papers or reports on environmental issues within the solid waste sector.
Papers are reviewed by the association's membership and submitted to the technical committee for approval.
The report on the Global Watch Technology Mission to Japan "Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): innovating novel recovery and recycling technologies in Japan" was nominated by Professor Giovanni Vallini to receive the ISWA Publication Award 2006.
Subsequently, the report was approved and won a third prize.
Arnold Black, Operations Director at the Resource Efficiency KTN, who acted as co-ordinator on the mission and collated the mission members' individual sections in the final report, was invited to Copenhagen to collect the prize at the ISWA 2006 annual conference, before an international audience of some 800 delegates, including the Crown Prince of Denmark and the Environmental Minister of the Danish Government.
A copy of the report itself was distributed to all the conference delegates.
The report has already proved so popular in the UK that it is currently out of hard copy print, but is available as a PDF file from the Resource Efficiency KTN website.
The award was particularly timely, as Black had recently returned from a similar follow-on mission to Europe (funded under the Global Watch Services programme) to compare the technological solutions from Europe with Japan.
This additional report is now available from the KTN portal and hard copies are available from Global Watch Services.
Due to imminent implementation of the WEEE Directive in the UK, the subject is very much a hot topic and the technologies and best practices observed on both trips are very relevant to government and industry thinking in the waste sector.
The Resource Efficiency KTN has a large number of members and organisations active in the area and is currently setting up a special interest group to help stimulate informed debate.
