Novel drain cleaners gain battery power

A Saft Rechargeable Battery Systems product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 1, 2005

The Trojan Tool company's cordless sewer and drain cleaner provides a powerful and safer alternative to AC powered devices that electrocute hundreds of plumbers every year.

Saft DC nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries are the reliable power source for a revolutionary range of sewer and drain cleaning machines made and marketed in the US by the Trojan Tool Manufacturing Co.

The new machines are designed for professional use replacing conventional mains dependence with battery power.

As well as giving plumbers much greater freedom the self contained units are much safer eliminating the needs for power cords and with it the risk of electrocution.

Trojan Tool's new Colt machine is powered by Saft VRE D 24V batteries.

The VRE D is a 5.5Ah Ni-Cd cell which is supplied to Trojan Tool in 20 cell battery packs that fit directly into the machine.

Apart from its safety and convenience features the Saft powered drain cleaning machines have out performed all competing mains powered machines by providing more usable torque.

Building on its initial success Trojan Tool is planning to extend battery power to the larger machines in its range.

These will be supported by Ni-MH batteries delivering current at 36V using Saft's VH D 9.5Ah cells.

Saft is fully supporting Trojan Tools transition from corded to cordless equipment with technical support and customisation.

According Keith Rutenberg, Chief operating Officer of Trojan Tool: "Apart from being safer the new cordless machines are more productive".

"A DC traction motor delivers substantially more torque than an AC machines and therefore performs better".

"Since they do not have the burden of 400ft of cable, which needs connecting in an inevitably wet environment, the units are safer, easier to handle and require fewer people to operate them".

"With lower risks other costs, like insurance, are lower".
