Scapa Polymerics, global manufacturer of compounds and tapes for the cable industry, has officially opened its new UK production facility in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester.

Scapa Polymerics, global manufacturer of compounds and tapes for the cable industry, has officially opened its new UK production facility in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester The site provides a substantial increase in capacity for the manufacture of the company's leading Megolon halogen-free, fire retardant, low smoke and fume compounds (LSFOH) and Megotape cable wrapping range

This is in line with growing customer demands.

Scapa's self-amalgamating tapes, used in cable jointing, have also been transferred to the larger Ashton facility to improve process efficiencies.

The new plant is a result of Scapa's decision to invest GBP 22 million over a six year period to create a manufacturing "centre of excellence" for cable products.

It will also play host to a state-of-the-art research and development facility designed to drive innovations in the cable and wire industry.

Considerable investment has resulted in the addition of three continuous compounding plants: a laboratory machine for new product development, a pilot plant for short runs of specialist products and large production machinery for higher volumes.

Manufacturing of Megolon compounds in Ashton, as well as at Scapa's existing Manchester premises, will facilitate a significant increase in production.

Scapa's Megotape range of cable wrapping tapes - which include water swellable, semiconductive, insulative, fire retardant and bitumenised tapes - will also be manufactured at the Ashton plant.

A new two metre wide coating machine, as well as additional conversion equipment to ensure slitting capacity is in line with coating, will be housed at the site.

Dr Jack Taylor, Business Unit Director for cable products at Scapa, comments: "As the market moves more towards the use of zero-halogen, fire retardant technology, cable manufacturers are looking for suppliers that can provide both volume compounds as well as their individual niche requirements".

"Our increased capacity means we are well positioned to satisfy these needs".
