New effective earth continuity testing
Seaward Electronic has developed a new method of carrying out earth continuity testing when undertaken as part of the electrical safety testing of portable appliances.
The new test technology recognises that a 200mA test current is rapidly becoming the European standard for in-service testing and testing after repair Seaward's new test technology uses a dual current high intensity test to overcome contact resistance problems or other situations where weak conductor connections may inhibit protective earth testing with conventional 200mA currents

The ERT1557 uses a current clamp test method to provide accurate earth electrode resistance measurement without disconnecting the electrode.
The Seaward 200mA test has been specially designed to help overcome variations in measurement that can be caused by contact resistance between the test probe and the appliance under test, for example, when measuring continuity of tarnished or corroded parts such as a kettle element.
The new Seaward test achieves this by applying a short duration high current pulse to 'pre-condition' the equipment under test, which is then followed by a 200mA test current to make the appropriate measurements.
The unique dual pulse current technology introduced by Seaward enables valid earth continuity tests to be carried out using lightweight, portable, battery powered testers.
This enables important earth continuity testing to be carried out quickly, safely and effectively by field service and test engineers.
The new test capability is already included in the Seaward's PrimeTest 300 bluetooth-enabled PAT tester and will be incorporated across all instruments in the PrimeTest range of hand held portable appliance testers.
Comprehensive test instrument and data management software options are available through the PATSolutions range of integrated portable appliance testing product packages. Request a free brochure from Seaward Electronic ...
