Seaward outlines approach to installation testing

A Seaward Electronic product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 16, 2009

Seaward Electronics has introduced a concept to address installation testing issues, leading to a reduction in the stages associated with 17th edition and Part P certification.

This integrated Powersolution approach eliminates the need for a multi-function test instrument and separate paper or PDA recording device normally associated with 17th edition test procedures.

It does this with an electronic copy of the inspection and test certificate stored in a combined multi-function electrical tester and data logger.

The lightweight Powerplus 1557 multi-function tester has been designed for maximum portability and ease of use.

Onboard electronic certificate software enables test data to be recorded directly by the tester using a replica of the inspection and test certificate, which is displayed on the instrument.

During inspection and testing, the user can navigate around the onboard electronic certificate.

When measured values are required, the appropriate measurement function is automatically enabled and results are automatically placed in the correct certificate fields.

Once all inspection and test data has been collected, the onboard Seaward Certificate Assistant will scan the certificate and warn the user if any fields appear to be incomplete or invalid.

The certificate assistance also holds many of the commonly used tabulated values, such as earth loop impedance tables, avoiding the need to take bulky reference material onsite.

When inspection and testing is complete, the certificate held inside the Powerplus 1557 tester can be transferred to the accompanying PC software for the completion of certificates, which can be printed or supplied in electronic format to customers in line with the 17th edition wiring regulations.

The Powersolution test specification package includes a non-trip loop test, high-current loop test, line impedance test, PFC and PSC tests, automatic RCD testing, earth continuity test, 100V, 250V, 500V and 1,000V insulation tests, plus voltage, frequency and phase rotation measurements.

An optional remote probe with built-in test button is provided for tricky three-handed operation.

The instrument incorporates USB and Bluetooth download and upload of data to and from PC certification and the record keeping system, and a wide variety of certificate templates can be loaded into the tester using the accompanying Powerplus PC software.

The software includes all required 17th edition certification and can print onto ECA, NAPIT and NICEIC stationery.

This 17th edition testing and certification system offers full traceability and reduced likelihood of human error in the recording and transfer of test data.
