London Business School has joined the cream of worldwide business schools in becoming the first UK institution to participate in the Sainsbury Management Fellowship Scheme, which encourages engineers to reach for senior positions within UK industry Brainchild of Lord Sainsbury, the Sainsbury Management Fellowship Scheme selects young and talented engineers and puts them through an MBA at a select list of international business schools
Through the scheme, engineers with a top-class business education are increasingly occupying senior executive positions in UK business in sectors as diverse as finance, technology, manufacturing and retail, as well as engineering.
Julia Tyler, Director of the London Business School MBA programme, comments: "It's vital that people coming from a technical background such as engineering are given the opportunity to progress into senior management, as they bring with them a unique understanding of products, services and technologies".
"The Sainsbury Management Fellowship has been successful in encouraging this, and London Business School is delighted to be part of the scheme, representing the UK alongside other top international business schools".
Paul Dolan, President of the Sainsbury Management Fellows' Society, comments: "Our scheme recognises that the skills required of an engineer - such as advanced numeracy, problem-solving and logical reasoning - can be the foundations for effective senior managers in many industry sectors when combined with the business acumen gained through a top class MBA".
"We only sponsor Sainsbury Management Fellows through the world's top MBA schools, and felt that the time was right to add the London Business School to this exclusive list".
"It has a reputation for academic excellence on a par with the other schools on our list, and can offer students a truly international experience and perspective".
Since its inception, the Sainsbury Management Fellowship Scheme has funded over 200 of Britain's best young engineers to complete an MBA at one of the western world's top business schools.
Many of these people now rank among Britain's most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders.
The London Business School joins Insead and HEC in France, IMD in Switzerland, RSM in the Netherlands, IESE in Spain and SDA Bocconi in Italy on the Sainsbury Management Fellowship's list of European business schools eligible for grants, alongside Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg and the University of Chicago in the USA.
Three current London Business School students - Ian Wilson, Nicola Winn and Davina Patel - are already being supported by the Sainsbury Management Fellowship, having successfully completed the application process.
To be considered for a Sainsbury Management Fellowship (which covers MBA tuition fees for one year), the applicant must be a UK citizen with an engineering honours degree, and chartered engineer status.
The application process is administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering, and applications can be made via its website.
