Engineers pass IoD certificate

A Sainsbury Management Fellowship product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 23, 2006

All 11 engineers who took an Institute of Directors course in running a company better have passed, despite the average pass rate normally being about 70%.

All 11 Sainsbury Management Fellows (SMF) who sat an exam in October 2005 have passed the Institute of Directors (IoD) Certificate in Company Direction, which is designed to help engineers increase their understanding of how to run companies better.

The IoD Certificate, which has an average pass rate of 70%, helps teach business disciplines involved in directing a company and includes such topics as corporate governance, finance and general business strategy.

The teaching on the course for the SMFs involved four days of web-based learning in September, followed by a further five days of face-to-face tutorials and lectures, before culminating in the exam.

Paul Dolan, President of SMF, said: "We wanted to set-up and fund this campaign to help engineers develop their business skills for the benefit of both the industry and the wider business community".

"We'll definitely be looking at continuing with similar campaigns in the future, particularly so following the 100% pass rate".

"As all SMFs already have an MBA from a top business school, it was really important for us to develop a practical, hands-on course which actually benefitted the people on the ground in how to be a good director in a company".

The IoD certificate is only the first step for the 11 SMFs as they will all be going on to study for the higher level IoD Diploma in March 2006.

The diploma is a step-up from the certificate and involves more in-depth practical knowledge of how to run a company, encompassing personnel, leadership, change management and marketing.

If successful, the SMFs could continue to pursue the status of chartered director, involving assessment of a professional review for each individual.

Karen Bayless, Head of IoD Board Development, said: "This is the first time we've specifically set-up the course to help engineers improve their skills in running a company".

"As they all already have a top MBA, their existing knowledge was very good in certain areas, for example finance, so we focused on different areas such as their corporate governance and strategic skills".

"For all participants to pass the examination is rare as it is a rigorous test for which the normal average pass rate is circa 70% and it is renowned for the high standards which it maintains".
