SMAC Europe has released preliminary details of the LXY-10, its smallest ever XY stage, which is currently in the final stages of development.

Weighing only 800 grammes and with 10mm of stroke in each of the axes, it has an overall dimension of only 65mm x 65mm x 81mm.

The total moving mass is only 160 grammes.

The first LXY10 was developed following a requirement from the University of Illinois to conduct research into micro machining applications.

Subsequently they also purchased the slide version of the recently introduced LA20 for mounting on the LXY10 in order to provide them with Z axis motion.

Both the XY stage and the actuator are controlled via SMAC controllers.

They have been particularly impressed with the precision and stability of the system and they have already committed to purchasing a further 5 units.

The compact packaging of the LXY-10 has been achieved whilst maintaining the traditional SMAC virtues of a direct drive zero backlash system, which can be controlled with great accuracy and repeatability.

It is supplied as standard with 1micron non-contact encoders with an option for 0.5micron encoders also under development.

Peak forces generated are 2.5kgf for the Y-axis and 1.6Kgf for the X-axis.

The capacity for controlling the velocity, acceleration, positioning and force of each axis independently, gives the end user a flexible and accurate tool.

The advantages of such a compact high-resolution system are obvious for anyone currently engaged in the research and development of miniature and micro machining markets.
