The Generics Group has announced that portfolio company Sphere Medical Holding has been awarded the Frost and Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation in the field of point-of-care technologies.

The Generics Group, a leading integrated technology consulting, development and investment organisation, has announced that portfolio company Sphere Medical Holding has been awarded the Frost and Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation in the field of point-of-care technologies.

Sphere, originally Generics' joint venture with Siemens Technology Accelerator, was incorporated to develop a series of unique chip-based micro-sensors for use in intensive care medicine.

The award was granted to Sphere in recognition of the company's design and development of an innovative micro-analyser system, which Frost and Sullivan analysts believe could have a significant impact on the point-of-care sector.

The micro-analyser houses a tiny diagnostic chip which, when placed on a patient's wrist, can analyse blood without it being removed from the body.

The chip provides access to accurate data, including critical parameters such as blood gas and glucose, in real time.

The system demonstrates significant advances in the field, particularly because of its ease of use, cost effectiveness and improved functionality, which has the potential to save lives.

Sphere is currently developing more advanced technology for the micro-analyser, capable of real-time monitoring of drugs and disease indicators which, says Frost and Sullivan, will further increase its attractiveness in the market.

Dr Stuart Hendry, CEO of Sphere Medical, commented: "It is very pleasing to see that a leading independent industry commentator such as Frost and Sullivan has recognised the potential of Sphere Medical's products among significant competition".

Martin Frost, Generics' Managing Director, added: "This is the fourth prestigious award for innovation that Generics and its portfolio companies have received over a 12 month period".

"Sphere is addressing a very large end-market, in which the quality of innovation is a critical differentiator".
