Scientific Generics is sponsoring this year's "Running the Gauntlet", an exclusive and unique business competition run by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) for entrepreneurs in the region, which offers a GBP 1 million investment fund from CREATE.

The competition aims to educate entrants about the approach to growing a business and securing investment funding.

It is run in partnership with East of England business investor CREATE and Library House, a supplier of data and research on innovation based companies whose CEO and Chairman is Doug Richard from BBC2's Dragon's Den.

Based on The Gauntlet, a web-based investment readiness tool developed by Library House and the London School of Economics, 50 shortlisted companies have the opportunity to pitch their business proposition to a panel of experts, chaired by Doug Richard and Boyd Mulvey, Chief Executive of CREATE, who provide feedback on investment potential.

Benefits of the competition include free access to The Gauntlet, a dedicated helpdesk staffed by the business support team at Business Link and a comprehensive package of in-kind services worth GBP 250,000 from all sponsors supporting the competition: Scientific Generics, Bailey Fisher Executive Search, Grant Thornton, HSBC, Mudhut Communication, Taylor Vinters and The Commercialisation Company.

Scientific Generics will provide master classes on the issues involved in managing technology and bringing technology and product based business propositions to market; one-to-one consultancy for up to five winning companies and offer three months' accommodation at its Harston Mill campus for one winning company.

Scientific Generics will also be hosting the Judgement day, when shortlisted companies pitch to the panel.

Five early entrants to the competition have also won places on the prestigious Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL) Summer School - an intensive, one week training programme for aspiring entrepreneurs and corporate innovators at the Judge Business School, Cambridge.

The programme, launched in 1999, has led to 55 new businesses being developed and over GBP 35 million in funding being raised by alumni.

John Greaves, Director of Public Sector Services at Scientific Generics, comments: "We are especially pleased to sponsor this competition".

"Generics is all about innovation and entrepreneurship and we are delighted to offer our skills, expertise and facilities to businesses in the region to help them succeed".

The entry deadline for the competition is midnight on 10th September 2006.
