Barcode scanner works quickly at a distance

A SICK (UK) product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 27, 2006

The CLV420 barcode scanner combines short read times with an impressive depth of field for use on some of the most demanding production lines.

With line speed and product traceability both vying for attention in modern manufacturing, assembly and packaging plants, the CLV420 barcode scanner from Sick (UK) enables engineers to satisfy the needs of both, thanks to its high scanning and decoding frequency.

Short read times and an impressive depth of field enable the CLV420, an enhanced version of the company's acclaimed CLV410, to be used on some of the most demanding production lines where products, tote boxes and other conveyor-borne articles have to be tracked for quality, scheduling and traceability purposes.

It is also especially suited to companies that employ print-and-apply labelling machines.

The CLV420 provides users with a number of additional features over and above those offered by the CLV410.

These include: CANbus compatibility, allowing multiple scanners to be connected to a network; two exit-window options (side view or inline) for mounting flexibility; and an auxiliary RS232 connection interface for other device or programming.

With external switching modules, the scanner can also be used in conjunction with Profibus DP, Interbus-S, DeviceNet and Ethernet.

Immediate benefits to users include code identification integrity, even with high conveyor velocities, easy and simple connectivity and easy setup procedures supported by state-of-the-art software tools such as auto-setup and profile code programming.

And, during operation, numerous diagnosis and visualisation functions provide efficient opportunities for system monitoring and optimisation.

Available in raster and line format, the CLV420 product family is ideal for intermediate reading ranges around 550mm, where it can be used to scan eight different barcode formats.

Larger distances or particularly "dense" codes can be addressed with the CLV421 (long-range) and CLV422 (high-density) variants of the laser scanner.

Measuring just 62.7 x 59 x 35.2mm and weighing in at 250g, the IP65-rated scanner can operate in temperatures between 0 and 40C and humidity levels up to 90%.

The CLV410's advanced functionality and extremely quick operational characteristics mean that engineers no longer have to trade speed against the need for traceability, enabling them to keep their machines running at optimum levels.
