Accelerometers test ejection seats
Up to 24 Entran accelerometers are attached at various points to the test dummy in the seat, all linked to an encoder which gathers the information and transmits it
Martin-Baker is a suppliers of ejection seats, and has used Entran accelerometers to measure the acceleration of the seat and test dummies for the last 15 years The seats need to be able to cope with occupants of a variety of heights and weights, meaning extensive testing involving test dummies weighing anything from 45 to 113kg

Tests also take place at a wide range of speeds - anything up to 1127km/h, although the typical ground speed for real ejection is usually between 322 and 483km/h.
The aim is to get the seat and its occupant up and away from the aircraft as quickly as possible but without subjecting the occupant to unacceptable force and acceleration.
International guidelines stipulate what the human body can reasonably be expected to deal with and so the test process is primarily geared to ensuring that forces remain within these tolerances .
Up to 24 Entran accelerometers are attached at various points to the test dummy in the seat, all linked to an encoder which gathers the information and transmits it back to a Martin-Baker Telemetry ground station for analysis.
Mark Osland, Senior Telemetry Engineer at Martin-Baker, commented: "We have been using Entran equipment for around 15 years now and it has always delivered what we wanted".
"The accelerometers are robust and unfailingly accurate, while the back-up service has been very good".
"We normally keep a stock of accelerometers, but have recently placed a further order with StrainSense as we are going to be undertaking projects comprising a series of tests where large numbers of sensors are required".
"Accuracy in testing is paramount to what we do, as we have to able to demonstrate to customers that our products work well - and by using Entran accelerometers we are confident in the data that we are presenting".
