Strainsense presents fluid property analyser

A StrainSense product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 15, 2008

Strainsense has developed the FPA4200 series, a sensor for directly measuring viscosity, density, dielectric constant and temperature of fluids in real time.

It is typically used for oil condition monitoring in lubrication systems and hydraulics to sense when maintenance is needed Using tuning fork technology, the sensor monitors the direct and dynamic relationship between multiple physical properties to determine the quality, condition and contaminant loading of fluids such as engine oil, fuel, transmission and brake fluid, hydraulic and gear oils, refrigerants and solvents.

It can detect the ingress of water in oil based on a change in the sensor's dielectric constant, while making a direct viscosity measurement, so it can inform the operator that the sensor is responding to water ingress and not a change in viscosity due to age or other viscosity modifiers.

Its multi-parametric analysis capability improves fluid characterisation algorithms, and it provides in-line monitoring of fluids for a wide range of OEM and end-user installations including fluid reservoirs, process lines and pressurised high-flow conduits (chemical feed, process loops) for applications that include on- and off-road vehicles, refrigeration circuits, compressors, oil and gas refining, commodity and fine chemical processes such as distillates, industrial equipment and turbines.

The FPA supports the dominant communication interface (digital CAN J1939- compliant, Modbus32 over RS-485 protocols) to simplify and enable plug-and-play connectivity with host computers, DCS and SCADA systems.
