Lewes Borough Council installs the premiere ScreenScan microfilm-to-digital workstation and reaps immediate benefits.

At the close of 1999, The Planning and Environment Department at Lewes Borough Council sought a long-term, cost-qualified, immediate solution for their ever-expanding 16mm and 35mm planning and building regulations documents, held on microfilm The department holds approximately 250,000 images, catering for developers, builders, architects, solicitors and members of the public

Jack Strutt, head of the department, stated: "We needed to find a replacement for our existing, aged reader and the ScreenScan A3 scanner offered the best solution for our needs - at around half the cost of a new reader printer.

Images with obscured detail, due to bad initial filming, can be enhanced with the precision software and we are now able to capture images on demand to a PC with microscopic accuracy, in a variety of methods, maintaining absolute clarity.

This is essential for our clients and, with the fax and email facilities, we will be able to deliver documents to customers even more efficiently." The ScreenScan system, installed by Mnemonic Information Systems, Portsmouth, is also utilised by the Engineering and Health departments capable of being run within the network.
