New company, founded in November 2005, can provide industrial severe service valve users with unbiased advice.

A new company, Scientific Valve and Seal, founded by John Williams in November 2005, can provide industrial severe service valve users with unbiased advice "Companies that want to optimise their valves to expand the envelope of performance, reliability and safety are our customers", said Williams, who has 28 years of experience in designing, reviewing, repairing and improving valves from subsea well-head to catalyst handling valves

He worked in research and development for WKM Valves, a division of Cooper Cameron, and more recently served as VP of Engineering for Mogas Industries, a severe service valve manufacturer, designing much of its current product offering.

As refineries and other industries strive to stretch the time between plant shut-downs to increase profitable production, there are often a few, problematic, severe service valves that can prevent this.

"Valve reliability can be incrementally improved through a systematic, scientific approach based on sound engineering principles, best practices and experience", said Williams.

"Numerous factors must be considered in determining the best valve for a specific application and sometimes adjustments can be made to enhance performance further".

According to Williams, a valve that still needs improvements to meet the company's objectives may be a candidate for Scientific Valve and Seal's engineered repair.

When repairs to OEM specifications repeatedly do not provide satisfactory results, a valve review and engineered repair can provide enhanced performance, saving the company money, according to Williams.

The Operations Manager for Scientific Valve and Seal is Robin Alexander, also formerly with Mogas.

Alexander said: "The actuator selection, adaption and settings have a tremendous affect on the optimal functioning of the valve and they should be considered as an integral unit".

With over 20 years as a Service Manager, Alexander's hands-on repair and actuation experience in the field complements Williams' valve design and engineering background.
