Drives for high-bay racking system

A Stober product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Mar 21, 2003

A new high-bay racking facility at Heroal's Verl headquarters near Gutersloh makes use of Posidrive FDS 4000 frequency inverters for driving control.

Heroal has invested Eur 15 million in a new administration building and additional high-bay racking facility at its Verl headquarters near Gutersloh.

Heroal (Henkenjohann Rollform-Aluminium) began using aluminium as building material many years ago.

Known originally as the inventor of roll-formed aluminium bars for shutters and roller-shutters doors, Heroal expanded to become an all round supplier of windows, doors conservatories and cladding.

The Heroal success is based on close partnerships with metalwork contractors who benefit from their high system and product quality.

The expansion of the company is demonstrated by the rationalisation in the construction of the new high-bay racking facility.

A manipulator is positioned at a central point in the high-bay racking area.

It controls the conveying of long line pallets to the right handover position and then transfers the pallets to separate entry and exit vehicles.

Items are withdrawn in the same way.

The manipulator stoke is 8mm and the hoist speed is 15m/min for a maximum lift weight of 2.1t.

The travel is 20m at a speed of 35m/min.

The drive system was designed and supplied by Stober Drives.

The hoist is driven by an MGS bevel geared motor and the travel by two MGS shaft-mounted helical geared motors fitted with incremental encoders.

Posidrive FDS 4000 frequency inverters are used for driving control.

Position control is by external absolute value encoders for the hoist and travel.

These signals are conveyed to the frequency inverters via SSI interfaces.

This is where the high quality of the Posidrive device functionality and software comes into its own.

To ensure precise positioning, the wheel diameter, cable reel diameter and gear ratio factors are set against the motor shaft without rounding off.

70 other MGS geared motors and frequency inverters of the Posidrve FDS 4000 type are used for the many different functions in the other handling and order picking sections.

All the frequency inverters are linked to the central programmable control system via Profibus DP.

The system has been running in automatic mode without any problems since commissioning.
