Sandvik Materials Technology has added three new grades to its range of stainless-steel tube and pipe for high-temperature applications.

Sandvik Materials Technology has added three new grades to its range of stainless-steel tube and pipe for high-temperature applications.

The new grades, designated Sandvik 1C256 (W.Nr 1.4724), Sandvik 1C356 (W.Nr 1.4742) and Sandvik 2C48 (ASTM TP 446.2), are ferritic stainless steels with high chromium content.

Added to the existing range of austenitic stainless-steel grades, they provide end users and equipment suppliers in the steel-making, petrochemical, furnace and power industries with an expanded range of selection options for high temperature materials depending on service conditions, service life, maintenance and cost requirements.

Typical applications for the new grades are recuperators and air heaters for the glass, carbon black, steel and waste incineration industries, muffle tubes for wire drawing and pyrometer tubes for the furnace industry.

The new ferritic grades Sandvik 1C256 and 1C356 are particularly well suited to use as recuperator tubing in flue gases containing a certain level of sulphur at operating temperatures between 500 and 750C.

They therefore complement Sandvik's existing feritic and austenitic high-temperature grades, Sandvik 4C54, Sandvik 253MAT and Sandvik 353MAT, designed for use at operating temperatures between 800 to 1175C in reducing sulphurous as well as in oxidising service conditions.

Grade Sandvik 2C48 is designed for use in soot-blower lance tubes in the boiler industry and also for pyrometer tubing.

Its ductility makes it particularly suitable for cable tubing for furnace temperature measuring systems.

Sandvik is producing tube and pipe in the new grades in a full size range between 20 and 70mm outside diameter.
