State owned design and engineering company Engineers India has selected stainless-steel heat exchanger tubes from Sandvik Materials Technology for Indian Oil Corp's Panipat Refinery.

State owned design and engineering company Engineers India has selected stainless-steel heat exchanger tubes in grade UNS N08028 (Sandvik Sanicro 28) to be supplied by Sandvik Materials Technology, Sweden for the DCU package of Indian Oil Corp's, Panipat Refinery, about 100km, north of Delhi.

Sandvik Materials Technology is supplying over 80km of 20 and 25mm outside diameter seamless tubes to the fabricator BHPV (Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels), for ten heat exchangers.

Sandvik Sanicro 28 (UNS N08028) is a multipurpose, austenitic stainless-steel alloy designed for service in highly corrosive conditions.

In the Panipat oil refinery and petrochemical application, the shell side of the heat exchangers are exposed to sour service and the potential for hydrogen induced cracking.

Shell side temperatures range from a minimum 40C to a maximum 88C with tube side cooling water between 33 and 45C.

Specially selected by Engineers India for its corrosion resistance, UNS NO8028 (Sandvik Sanicro 28) offers very high corrosion resistance in strong acids, very good resistance to stress and intergranular corrosion, pitting and crevice corrosion and has good weldability.

It has good resistance in chlorides, and also in heat exchangers using sea water as the cooling medium.

Sandvik Materials Technology produces Sandvik Sanicro 28 seamless tube and pipe in dimensions up to 260mm outside diameter and supplies a range of ANSI pipe and heat exchanger tubes from stock.

The steel grade is also available in the form of fittings, welding wire, wire and covered electrodes, strip, bar, plate, sheet, forged and cast products.
