Approval for use in public water supplies has been given to the range of stainless steel pipe produced by Sandvik Materials Technology.

Approval for use in public water supplies has been given to the range of stainless steel pipe produced by Sandvik Materials Technology.

Granted by the Drinking Water Inspectorate, on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, seven stainless steel pipe grades, supplied by Sandvik Materials Technology in the UK, have been added to the register of approved products and manufacturers.

In the UK, all products used in the supply of water for drinking, washing, cooking or food production must be approved, and all contractors sourcing materials for use with water systems are required to use only approved materials.

Key applications for Sandvik pipe include process pipework, fittings, flanges, valves and seals.

The approved grades include standard stainless steel 304L, 316L and 317L materials but also some Sandvik special grades, such as Sandvik 3R66.

This is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic steel with low carbon and nitrogen contents.

It has particular application in the food and drink industries where a clean steel is required.

It is often supplied with a high quality surface finish.

Other grades offer improved corrosion resistance, such as Sandvik 3R64 which provides good resistance to general and pitting corrosion.

Also included are the duplex stainless steel grades, Sandvik SAF 2205 and SAF 2507 which combine high strength with excellent corrosion resistance.
