GBP 1 million boiler tube order placed

A Sandvik Materials Technology UK product story

Esshete 1250 (EN 1.4892) steel grade boiler tubes will be used at the Drax power station to replace superheater tubing to cover outage needs during 2007.

Sandvik Materials Technology has received an order worth over GBP 1 million for Esshete 1250 (EN1.4892) steel grade boiler tubes for use at Drax power station.

Required as replacement superheater tubing to cover outage needs during 2007, the order covers several different tube sizes between 38 and 67mm outside diameter.

The use of material grade Esshete 1250 (EN1.4892) is further confirmation of its suitability for demanding conditions in superheater and reheater units in coal-fired power generation and its specification as a standard design material in UK power stations.

Drax Power Station is owned and operated by Drax Power and is the largest coal-fired power station in the UK.

The output capacity of its six generators is 4000MW, which at current output levels provides around 7% of the UK's electricity needs.

Esshete 1250 (EN1.4892) is an austenitic CrNiMn steel with high strength relative to other austenitic alloys used in power generation.

Developed in the 1960s, the grade was produced in response to industry demands to use higher pressures and temperatures than were suitable for the normal austenitic steel grades, such as AISI 316H, 347H and 321H.

The grade was designed with high strength at elevated temperatures up to 675C combined with high ductility.

It has microstructure and mechanical properties which remain stable over a long period.

It is easily fabricated and welded using standard procedures and offers good oxidation resistance.

Whilst large quantities of tube have been supplied in standard austenitic steels, deliveries of Esshete 1250 (EN1.4892) have exceeded one million metres, totalling around 4800 tonnes in typical superheater and reheater tube sizes between 30 and 70mm outside diameter.

It has been used successfully for periods of over 170,000 hours, both on baseload and in multi-shift operations, where it has survived hundreds of boiler starts and restarts without problems.

In the UK, Esshete 1250 (EN1.4892) has been used extensively in both Drax and Rugeley B power stations.
