Thin film provides pressure readings
Futek used Pressurex to help redesign several of its clamps to incorporate silicone die springs to regulate the pressure more precisely.
Sensors add new freedom to pressure mapping
Sensor Products has expanded its Tactilus line of dynamic electronic pressure mapping systems with the introduction of its Free Form sensor systems.
Applications exist for both manufacturing process control and machine/component inspection and calibration.
Pressurex sensor film comes in the form of a large thin sheet, actually a film.
When placed between interfacial surfaces, the sensor film instantaneously and permanently changes color to reveal minute measurements of dispersion and degrees of pressure.
The intensity of this color is proportional to the amount of force applied, allowing the user to actually quantify the stress characteristics across the surface.
Precise PSI (kg/cm2) can be determined by comparison of the sensor film to a color calibration chart (conceptually similar to interpreting Litmus paper), or by using one of several imaging systems that Sensor Products supplies.
Pressurex is a valuable aid in R and D and QC/QA for assessing pressure distribution between gasketed and flanged interfaces, components, tools or machines, welding heads, and determining drawing pressure in dies.
Applications include metal and ultrasonic welding, roller nips, clutch and brake plates, materials lamination, electronic component packaging, heat sinks and seals, impact forces, plastics processing, particulates and sprays.
In general, any application that needs visually detailed analysis of stress between two surfaces can benefit from Pressurex's capabilities.
Pressurex is an NDT (non-destructive testing) concept that can greatly enhance yields and improve quality with a relatively minor investment.
With a maximum gauge of 8 mils, Pressurex is ideal for invasive intolerant environments that cannot accommodate traditional load cells and other transducers.
Its ease of use makes it an extremely low-cost (approximately $0.12 USD to $0.32 USD per kg/cm2) and effective testing medium.
