Sensor measures nip width in real time

A Sensor Products product story

E-nip is an electronic nip impression system for real-time static roll analysis which reveals actual nip width (contact width between rolls) across the entire length of a roll cross directionally

Sensor Products introduces E-nip, an electronic nip impression system for real-time static roll analysis.

The sensor system reveals actual nip width (contact width between rolls) across the entire length of a roll cross directionally.

E-nip is a valuable process control tool for any web-based production environment.

E-nip reveals inaccurate roll alignment and roll skewing.

Either of these issues can result in uneven processing, wrinkled or mottled products, compacted sheets, excessive sheet breaks and blackening during calendering.

Consistent nip width values must be present across the entire roll to ensure a uniform product.

Information obtained from E-nip allows for precise crown correction.

E-nip works on drilled or grooved rolls of either composite, rubber, metal or other roll material The E-nip electronic nip impression system consists of up to seventy-five (75) thin resistive ink sensors, a data interpretation hub, connecting cables and the E-nip software.

The sensors measure nip widths at multiple points along the roll cross direction for a single set of rolls or multiple roll sets (up to three simultaneously).

E-nip software analyzes the data received from the sensors in the nip and displays the measurement values in a variety of graphical formats for easy interpretation.

E-nip differs from other tactile pressure sensors primarily in that it does not attempt to convert electronic signals (resistance) to a pressure level but rather measures the nip width contacting the sensor directly, thereby alleviating a major source of inaccuracy.

Furthermore, E-nip utilizes sophisticated electronics and shielding techniques to eliminate problems from externally generated electromagnetic noise.

Finally, E-nip automatically performs a full calibration before each nip impression session.

Each sensor element is fabricated to micron level tolerances and is individually tested for accuracy and repeatability during the manufacturing process.
